High-quality plant nutrients are imported back into SL

COLOMBO (news 1st); The import of high quality plant nutrients was allowed again.

The decision was made according to a risk management plan drawn up by a group of agronomists and experts to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Speaking to News 1st, Department of Agriculture Secretary Prof. Udith K. Jayasinghe stated that several phytonutrients, including urea, had been ordered.

He added that discussions on this would be held with the President next week.

The Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Prof. Udith K. Jayasinghe, further stated that following the results of the adverse weather situation, a risk management plan was drawn up by a group of 11 experts.

In accordance with the recommendations of the expert panel, the decision was made with regard to the importance of food safety mechanisms in times of extreme weather conditions.

The Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture added that at this point in time Sri Lanka did not have the capacity to produce sufficient organic fertilizers, while the existing organic fertilizer supplies were also threatened by the extreme weather conditions.

The minister at the ministry said that the decision to ban chemical fertilizers had actually done some damage.
